"ON THE
TWELFTH DAY
OF
CHRISTMAS,
MY TRUE LOVE
GAVE
TO ME :"
One
griffin
smiling
One
angel watching
One
mermaid
singing
One
parrot
preening
A big
blue thistle
blooming
A
gentleman
a-courting
With
gifts and game
for grilling
To a smiling
maiden
waiting!
A
pear-tree
a-leafing
One
unicorn
prancing
And a
sunflower
opening
A
tree-lined garden
growing...
And a
lion
walking on the grassy green !!!
Although many of us must celebrate apart from our families and loved ones this year,
MAY THE
'SPIRIT OF THIS CHRISTMAS'
STILL BE
AS
'OVERWHELMINGLY ABUNDANT'!
AS
THE
'TWELFTH DAY' ABOVE,
and
'REMEMBERED WITH FONDNESS' ...
... in the years yet to come.
Pictured above, a "Charles II Beadwork & Stumpwork Framed Panel", England, c1670
(now with a private collection).
This example is somewhat unusual in its depiction within squares,
a technique generally seen in single panels framing 17th century small mirror plates and basket sides.
Its original intent has been suggested as a "layette" basket base.
The glass beads were likely obtained from Murano, Italy.
