RARE GEORGE II SILVER SAUCER-FORM WINE TASTER

Joseph Sanders, London 1738

Rare George II Silver Saucer-Form Wine Taster, Joseph Sanders, London 1738

In the "Bordeaux" circular saucer form,

having a flared rim and high domed central section, the dome rising above the sides;

fully marked to the outer side;

this form considered by some to be the "only true English silver wine taster".

The earliest known British taster was of the domed saucer form, dating c1570,

and dredged from the Thames in the late 20th century.

The "c1570 wine taster" sold at Christie's London, December 2019, sale 17725, lot 109.

As wine was not a British product, very few wine tasters were made in Great Britain.
A slightly greater number in the punched and handled 'Iberian form'

were produced from the mid-17th century to c1690.

However, any British wine taster is considered rare - those of the 18th century perhaps rarer.

quite possibly the same taster as the presented.
