PAPIER-MÂCHÉ COMMEMORATIVE SNUFF BOX
France, Late 18th Century

The circular box with pull-off cover, the cover with domed rock crystal (or glass) insert
over a three dimensional tableau commemorating Federation of 14th July 1790
(First anniversary of Bastille Day),
featuring 3-dimensional soldiers with gilt swords before a constructed stepped monument,
the figure atop sided by urns and holding the French tricolor of 1789-94,
at the base the inscription "Federation Du 14 juillies" over "1790";
all set within a gilt metal surround,
the box itself of red papier-mâché with a black rim decorated in white dots forming leaves and flowerheads;
the base verso with sponged gilt decoration with a black rim having 2-dot repeated decoration around
This celebration took place on the Champs de Mars.
Talleyrand, then the Bishop of Autun, was one of the presiding officials.
The Royal Family was in attendance. The revolution was then in the early benevolent phase.
The flaming urns to the sides represent an oft-used late-Louis XVI decorative motif.

Condition : Overall excellent, with minor expected wear to papier mache;
one gilt sword blade loose; some scratching to the glass

Talleyrand (then Bishop of Autun) can be seen on the right.
The standing child is the son of La Fayette, the young Georges Washington de La Fayette.
