GEORGE III DIMINUTIVE MAHOGANY GENTLEMAN'S FITTED DRESSING CHEST

England, c1780

George III Diminutive Figured Mahogany Gentleman's Fitted Dressing Chest, England, c1780

Of compact size and highly figured dense timber (possibly Cuban)

with rich color and patination,

the moulded edge top above

a fitted drawer with a baize inset slide retracting to reveal

a ratcheting dressing mirror

flanked by an arrangement of divided compartments and lidded compartments,

above a long drawer sided by lopers and two further graduated drawers;

pull-out pen compartment to right side

raised on bracket feet; the brasses appear original, with one replaced post

An 'Aside' Note :

18th century dressing chests are generally of a higher quality of timber and construction than other chests.

I would like to add that, although known as "gentleman's dressing chests",

these chests also make perfect "ladies' dressing chests".

The small compartments beautifully accomodate the many needed small dressing items,

as jewelry, hair accessories, even note pens and sewing notions and buttons.

There are even hidden compartments to stash that extra 20.00 we ladies

occasionally hide from ourselves, for "discovery" at a later date.

Additionally, the chest height and pullout drawer, with both mirror and baize covered slide,

well serve ladies' daily dressing routines.

Condition : Excellent with normal wear to include :

small nicks, scratches and chips; several scratches to mirror plate; evidence of old worming to feet;
one later blocks to backs of feet; missing two compartment covers

31.6" High x 36.4" Wide x 22.3" Deep
