    RARE FIRST PERIOD WORCESTER GU BEAKER VASE

England, c1765-70

 

   

 

 

In the Chinese Gu-form, trumpet-shaped with knopped lower section above a flaring foot.printed in underglaze

blue in the 'Fruit Sprays' pattern with pomegranates and floral sprays; underglaze hatched crescent mark verso

 

Note: The gu form dates to Neolithic ceramics in the lower and middle basins of the Yangxi River in China. 

A 6.25” ritual beaker from the 11th - 13th century BC (Shang Dynasty),

is spoken of as having “a bulging waist with flanges,

a feature also noted on contemporary bronze vessels” (He Li, Chinese Ceramics). 

This form was used by Worcester in the 1750-60’s,

sometimes used in garnitures alternating with baluster forms.    

 

Condition : Excellent with no breaks or restoration;
a few very minor surface scratches; usual glaze irregularities inside mouth (shown below)
