CAST BRASS SCISSOR-FORM SNUFFERS AND UNDERTRAY

England, Late 17th or Early 18th Century

Cast Brass Scissor-Form Snuffers & Undertray, England, late 17th Century / Early 18th Century

The heavy cast brass scissor snuffers with curved box and pointed end
(for uncurling the burnt wick before trimming, and prodding the candle stub from the nozzle);
resting on a conforming undertray having a central shaped scissor support,
and ring-supported lobed handle at the larger end;
the whole raised on three hoof feet

Scissor snuffers on undertrays date from the late 17th century,
and eventually overtook the upright stands from the mid-18th century forward.
As the scissors are a perfect fit to the handle and supports,
our considered opinion is that these scissors are original to the base.

Condition : Excellent, without repairs;

remains of inscription on the box, no longer legible

The Stand, 10" Long / The Scissors, 7" Long
12.6 oz.
