17th century silver-mounted BURR MAPLE apostle spoon

Swiss / German, c1600-1650

The early 17th century carved and silver-mounted burr maple apostle spoon

with a deep round wooden bowl and tapering faceted wooden stem,

the shaft capped by a pentagonal silver collar having a finial of St. Paul, holding a Bible and long sword,

(the sword an emblem of martyrdom and “the good fight”),

a pair of double chevrons scratch-engraved to the sides and reverse

Condition : Excellent for age and usage; glorious rich patina;

two very minor shrinkage cracks to bowl rim; a small section professionally reglued to rim (invisible);

silver collar reattached but original; possibly once with an inscription to the shaft front

Note :

The physical existence of silver-mounted wooden spoons of this age defies logic.

To hold them and realize their history of use and early personal value is within itself a rather electrifying experience.

Very few have been offered at auction for the past years.
Several were offered in the following sales :

European Works of Art, the Private Collection & Gallery of the Blumka Estate,
Sotheby's, New York, 1996

Syd Levethan : The Longridge Collection, London, South Kensington, 2011
