TWO DARK GREEN GLASS SEALED CYLINDER WINE BOTTLES
England, c1800 & c1820, Cornwall Interest

The dark moulded bottles of the 17th and early 18th century
continued in use well into the 19th century, existing in various shapes and sizes.
Among the most collectible of these colored bottles is the
"SEALED BOTTLE".
The English practice of adding 'seals' to glass bottles dates to the 17th century.
In 1622, a law was passed prohibiting the sale of wine by the bottle.
Thus 'gentlemen of wealth', taverns, universities and organizations
would necessarily take their bottles to the merchant to be filled.
The process of adding a seal to a bottle was quite expensive.
It involved attaching a small blob of glass whilst it was warm,
then stamping it with a metal or ceramic die.
Due to these seals, it is possible to track many back to their original owners.

Trelaske was a manorial settlement, first recorded in the Domesday Book.
The estate was owned by the Uptons from the time of Richard II (1377-99), until 1541,
when under the name of Trelaske Hall, it passed to Nicholas Lower.
It was in the Lower family and their heirs for five generations.
A large landscaped park added in the 1750s.
Only the west part of the house now remains, adjacent to the former stable block
which has been converted into a house now called 'Trelaske Manor'.
There are only fragments surviving of the park.
A bungalow was built in the walled garden which is now across the road from the manor.

Earl of Mount Edgcumbe is a title in the Peerage of Great Britain.
It was created in 1789 for George Edgcumbe, 3rd Baron Edgcumbe.
This branch of the Edgcumbe family descends from Sir Piers Edgcumbe of Cotehele
in Cornwall
(descended from the younger son of Richard Edgcumbe (fl. 1324) of Edgcumbe,
in the parish of Milton Abbot in Devon,
who acquired an estate near Plymouth
through marriage in the early 16th century,
which was later re-named "Mount Edgcumbe".
Its titles have remained in the Edgcumbe family for many generations,
the descendants serving as important politicians and Members of Parliament.
As of 2021 the titles
are held by his nephew, the ninth Earl,
the third son
of George Aubrey Valletort Edgcumbe, brother of the seventh Earl.
The heir apparent to the earldom uses the courtesy title of Viscount Valletort.
