RARE SET OF 6 QUEEN ANNE ROYAL SPOONS

Lewis Mettayer, London, 1713

Shown above is a rare straight set of 6 Queen Anne Britannia Silver tablespoons,

each with the Royal Cipher of Queen Anne within the Order of the Garter, below the Royal Coronet.

Queen Anne served as monarch of England, Scotland and Ireland from 1702-14.

She was the daughter of James II, who was exiled from England for religious reasons by his daughter and son-in-law,

William & Mary. Anne was to be the last ruler of the legendary Stuart line, dying at age 49 with no heirs.

As a woman, I find Anne's life story and strength remarkable.

Before her ascent to the throne at 37, she bore 18 children, none surviving beyond the age of 11-

that being a son William, who had been born with encephalitis.

A daughter Mary died at 2 of small pox in 1687.  The other 16 were miscarried or stillborn.

She rose above the repeated defeat and sorrow, family conflicts, and her own physical infirmities,

to become a strong and beloved leader, even uniting historically feuding England and Scotland into Great Britain.

She represents for me a singular heroine and example of womanhood.

This set of tablespoons was made for her by one of England's leading Huguenot silversmiths,

Lewis Mettayer, in 1713 - the year before her death.
