RARE SET OF 6 GEORGE I SILVER HANOVERIAN DESSERT SPOONS

Paul de Lamerie, London, c1720

Rare Set of 6 Paul de Lamerie Dessert Spoons, c1720

Of heavy gauge silver, each with rattail attachment and unengraved upturned terminal,
the shafts married 4 times with maker's mark only

Notes :
Early Georgian Hanoverian dessert spoons have become excessively difficult to find.
It is feared many met the smelter between 2008 and 2012.

Paul de Lamerie was considered the greatest silversmith of the 18th century.
A set of de Lamerie rattail dessert spoons is even rarer,
particularly as the majority of his works focused on hollowware.

Marks :

Bearing de Lamerie's markers mark of 1716.

Beginning 1720, a duty tax was imposed on hallmarked silver.

For a short time after the ruling, de Lamerie apparently continued to deliver plate bearing only his 4 marks .

It is impossible to know if these spoons were produced prior to the 1720 law,

or among pieces simply on the cusp of that date.

Condition : Bowls with minor wear; most marks somewhat rubbed;

a bit bright but retaining patination; otherwise excellent

7" Long / 7.7oz.
