QUEEN ANNE BRITANNIA SILVER CASTER

Charles Adam, London, 1707

Of baluster form with applied central girdle, the domed pierced cover with a bayonet lock, the piercing of two different designs on two planes, knop finial, raised on a domed circular foot; marked to body and lid -

maker’s mark and lion's head erased on lid pierced through but quite legible

Note :

The pierced decoration on two planes is distinctive to the Queen Anne period casters, c1705-10.

Charles Adam is the best known caster maker of this period and form. Adam was apprenticed to

Francis Archbold in 1682, free 1689, his first and only mark registered 1703.

Castor maker Thomas Bamford was apprenticed to Adam in 1703.

No date is given for Adam’s retirement (which he apparently did prior to his death), or for his death.

Three similar Charles Adam casters have been sold through this gallery (See Below)
