Fine George III Mahogany & Brass Bottle Carrier, England or possibly Ireland, c1780... holding some "Southern Things".

Although this is a fine - actually quite sophisticated & rare - c1780 Georgian Brass-Mounted Mahogany "Bottle Carrier",

here in Tennessee...it holds some "Southern Things"??

RC - MOON PIE - IT'S A SOUTHERN THING

Moon Pies were first introduced in Chattanooga, Tennessee, about the time of the beginning of the Great Depression.  They soon became so popular in the South

that by 1950, eating Moon Pies with RC Cola (developed by a Columbus, Georgia, pharmacist in 1905) had become the "working man's lunch"

This great popularity was celebrated in the 1951 song by

Big Bill Lister "Gimme an RC Cola and A Moon Pie"

A few videos are running on YouTube of his perfomance.

In 1973, NRBQ had a minor hit with the song

"An RC Cola and a Moon Pie".,

You can try YouTube for this one too.

Since 2008, Mobile, Alabama, has raised a

12-foot-tall lighted mechanical Moon Pie to celebrate the coming of the New Year. As the clock strikes midnight,

a giant banana-colored Moon Pie is raised by a crane to a height of 200 feet .  Also for the 2008 occasion, a

55 pound Moon Pie containing 45,000 calories was baked.

An annual RC & Moon Pie Festival is  celebrated in Bell Buckle, Tennessee (right).

A Moon Pie Eating Contest is held in

Bessemer, Alabama

Newport, Tennessee, held its

First Annual Moon Pie Festival in May, 2012

On October 16, 2012, Sonya Thomas (Caruthersville, Missouri), a competitive

 eater known as "Black Widow",

ate 38 Moon Pies in 8 minutes.

Jack Daniel's Distillery, Lynchburg TN, makiing maple charcoal

Jack  Daniel's, a brand of sour mash Tennessee

whiskey, is produced in Lynchburg, Tennessee.

Known for its square bottles and black label, it is the highest selling American whiskey in the world.

The distillery was founded in 1866 by Jasper Newton

"Jack" Daniel.  The whiskey is filtered through sugar

maple charcoal (shown being produced left) - an extra step not used in making most Bourbon whiskey -- so making it different than Bourbon.

After being used for ageing the whiskey, some barrels

are sold to the McIlhenny Co., Avery Island,

Louisiana, for the production of Tabasco sauce

(found on many tables in Memphis, Tennessee).

Memphis-style barbecue is generally made with pork, usually ribs and/or shoulders.  It is slow-cooked in a pit or on a grill.  Ribs can be prepared either "dry" (with a "rub" of salt and various spices,

or "wet" (brushed with sauce before, during and after cooking).

The "old Memphis" cooking method was basting with a sweet

spicy sauce (a sample recipe below) while cooking, and seasoning

with a hot vinegar-based sauce while eating. Methods and preferences have changed through the years.  Bozo's Barbecue in Mason, Tennessee, still offers both the sweet (mild) sauce, and

vinegar- based hot sauce - and ships (information below).

Each May, Memphis is home to The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, which has been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest pork barbecue contest in the world.

Should you like to try your hand at making your own sauce (for really delicious ribs), here is a

1956 RECIPE FOR A HOT SWEET BASTING SAUCE :

It's fantastic and what we used in the "old days"...

1 cup catsup

1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce

2-3 dashes Tabasco Sauce

1 cup water

3/4 cup vinegar

1 tablespoon sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon celery seed

Combine all ingredients. Heat to boiling. Simmer 30 minutes.

Baste while cooking, especially the last 30 minutes, turning frequently.

Makes enough sauce for basting 4 pounds ribs.

and a happy 4th - FROM TENNESSEE...
