The rectangular book-matched top banded with sycamore over a conforming
case with two short over one long cockbeaded drawers, each also with a band of sycamore
and contrasting timbers siding bone; the case frieze with a carved pendant shell and banded sides;
resting on cabriole legs with carved leaf and scroll decoration,
and resting upon pad feet; retaining the original brasses;
with 1978 receipt
Condition : Excellent for age and usage; usual walnut veneer spotted; left front leg reattached;
expected veneer shrinkage to veneers; one area of shrinkage and wax fill on the top left edge;
the top with a slight rise to the back right side (visible in images);
one small loss to lower right brass (not visible when bail is down)
26.5" High x 25.5" Wide x 18" Deep
NOTE :
An associated highboy with claw & ball feet is illustrated MacQuoid & Edwards,
"Age of Walnut", (c1919 edition), no. 210, with discussion (p.225) as below :
"...and a so-called cockbeading is introduced as a finish round the drawers,
which are veneered with tiger walnut and cornered with a narrow inlay.....cabriole legs ending in claw and ball feet,
headed by the favourite shell ornamentation, introduced as a pendant on the lower rail."
