GEORGE IV
BRASS-MOUNTED MAHOGANY FOLIO
STAND
England, c1825
The adjustable stand with two hinged rectangular slatted rests and
turned ratchet supports sided by upright brass-handled rectangular
standards above moulded splay feet having interior notched supports
and ending in brass paw caps on casters, turned connecting stretcher
Condition : Excellent nicks and scratches appropriate to age and
usage; one rest with well-blended reinforcement wooden dowels to the
outside for a fracture that does not go through the wood
Note : I have always loved
the trellis- and "transformer-" like form of folio stands. But
apparently not all agree.
I must quote this amusing
description from "British Antique Furniture", John Andrews, Pl. 663 :
"Quite a different sort - a
folio stand, the type that picture dealers have to have for
unmounted prints, drawings
and watercolours. A
heavy utilitarian example which always seems to be in demand no
matter how ugly."

The above showing well matched peg
reinforcement to right and left uprights.
The split apparently went only
partially through the staves.
