GEORGE II  IRISH MAHOGANY LIBRARY ARMCHAIR

Ireland, c1750

 

 

 

The high straight upholstered back over padded straight arms with molded incurved supports over a trapezoidal upholstered seat, raised on turned tapering front legs ending in ball and claw feet connected by block and turned stretchers to canted raked back legs;

newly covered with appropriate horsehair and unmilled cotton underpinnings,

and lined Scalamandre soft gold silk damask covering, applied with close-nailed tacks

 

Note :

An idential pair was sold at Sotheby's, NY, 2008 :

"almost certainly supplied to Joseph Leeson, 1st Earl of Milltown (d. 1783)

for Russborough, Co. Wicklow, in the 1750's

possibly for the saloon as part of an extensive suite

comprising at least fourteen armchairs two sofas and a daybed."

Condition : Excellent; old tipping to feet (not unusual)
