George II Carved Oval Giltwood Mirror, England, c1755 


The antique rococo oval mirror possibly retaining the original mirror plate

set within a shaped cartouche border comprised of 4 carved giltwood C-scrolls,

the upper and lower scrolled inner slip enhanced with small lunettes,

the side scroll slip with incised zig-zag lines; all within an outer border of further C- and S-scrolls,

having rockwork to the upper and lower rims;

the sides centering well detailed floral and foliate pendants,

the pendants ending in coiled acanthus leaves and icy waterfalls;

the pendant stem and flowerheads enhanced with further zig-zag decoration;

the crest and apron each of C-scrolls centering an acanthus spray,

the crest surmounted by a further asymmetrical acanthus spray


Provenance : With Ronald Phillips Ltd., London


Condition : Excellent and with wear, nicks and scratches appropriate to age;

scattered small repairs and re-stabilizations to the carving; bole,

gesso and wood visible in small areas throughout; re-backed and partially re-gilt

(most of this form have been regilt due to their inherent fragility);

mirror plate with foxing and minor losses to silvering


Overall : 38.75" High x 22" Wide  /  Mirror Plate : 20.75" High x 14.25" Wide
