GEORGE III SILVER ARGYLL

Daniel Smith & Robert Sharp, London, 1783

 

 

Of elegant vase shape with a beaded upper rim, footrim and cover,
having an outer warming jacket with small side filling spout
between a straight tapering spout and opposing c-scroll wooden handle,
raised on a pedestal base with stepped the lift-off cover surmounted by a ball finial;
crisp marks to the footrim, with the upper marks partially struck due to footrim depth;

the cover with makers marks and lion passant

 

 

 

Note :

An argyll (argyle) is an insulated gravy pot, reputedly invented by the third Duke of Argyll of Scotland.

As there was a long journey to from the kitchen to the dining table,

some method – in this case a jacket of hot water, or sometimes a central conical heated insulator –

was ingeniously devised to keep the gravy warm.

The earliest recorded argyle dated to 1755, becoming more common after 1770.

 

Condition : Excellent with minor surface wear only; the cover and handle with firm fit;

very minor bend to spout tip;

interior silver lining with a minor separation at the top, shown in images
