A very fine and large set, the tapering form on a circular base, the lower stem decorated with vertical columns of palmettes
above a knop of gadrooning and wider knop acanthus, over a tall row of vertical of gadrooning
descending to a row of gadrooning alternating with shells and plain footrim;
the shoulders with further gadrooning alternating with shells.;
the urn shaped nozzles with lower gadrooning, and bobeches en suite (gadrooning alternating with shells);
both the elevated central light and the s-curving 2-light branches detachable, the arms reeded and with foliate knops,
the nozzles and wax pans corresponding to the candlesticks;
pitch filled to the interior;
Marks :
Each candlestick marked on the base rim, and the central marked verso lights verso,
with Boulton’s double sun mark
Condition : Excellent; some expected bleed to the high points on the gadrooning;
minor expected occasional small dings as well as wear to the bottom edges
Note :
Matthew Boulton was not only an important British silversmith
who was active in establishing
the silver assay office in Birmingham, but he
was a pioneer with James Watt in the development
of the steam engine, making
possible the mechanization of factories and mills throughout the United
Kingdom.
His techniques were also applied to minting coins, striking
millions of coins for the British Royal Mint,
as well as for other
countries.
