GEORGE III INLAID MAHOGANY DEMI-LUNE SIDEBOARD

England, late 1780’s

Of finest quality and good color, the demi-lune or D-form case with brass rail,
the top inlaid with boxwood and ebony stringing, and mahogany edge crossbanding,
above a conforming case with front center string inlaid drawer
and a shaped apron enclosing a cupboard with sliding tambour door,
flanked by 2 deep drawers and 2 end cabinets,
 the doors with circular ebony stringing centering oval urn-form brasses (possibly original),
supported by tapering legs ending in spade feet, the front legs headed by boxwood verticals resembling flutes,
over further stringing

Condition: Old finish with good color; and brasses possibly original;
connecting rail a replacement; several expected minor patches to veneer;
tambour in good working order;
the back with tenoning at the two ends, and having old square nails
(verso not with center tenoning due to the V-shaped interior construction)

Provenance: Albemarle County Virginia estate

Note : The occurrence of sliding tambor doors on a George III sideboard is rather rare.

This highly prized feature doubles the amount of storage available.
