FRENCH GILT-BRONZE MOUNTED TORTOISESHELL SNUFF OR TOBACCO BOX

Late 18th Century

 

 

 

 The rectangular box with a hinged lift top, pressed & carved on each side with leafy tendrils

on a diamond-diapered ground, the interior with a plain surface,

the gilt-bronze mounts reeded with acanthus thumb rest

 

Condition : Excellent, with 2 small pin-size shallow holes to the verso,

visible on close inspection only; minor pitting to the gilt mounts on the interior;

several nicks & scratches to mounts; without cracks to the tortoise

(what appears to be a possible crack at the upper left hand corner of the lid is carving)

 

3.25” Long x 2-3/8” Deep x 1.5” High
