FINE WILLIAM IV SILVER MARROW SCOOP
William Chawner, London, 1830, Thread / Shell Variant
Of heavy gauge silver, in a Shell / Thread pattern variant, of usual double ended form, the large bowl heel with a stamened anthemion arising from a leafed stalk and threaded shaft, and crested with an arm embowed in armor proper garnished or, the hand also proper grasping by the blade a broken sword argent hilt and pommel gold with a branch of laurel vert., for Family of Knapp; the front shaft also with thread and athemion attachment to bowl
The Knapps whose crest this is were seated at Tuddenham in the County of Norfolk and at Needham and Washbroke in the neighboring County of Suffolk. A member of this family, John Knapp acquired New Plate at Stoke near Ipswich where he was a merchant and portman of the town. When John died in 1604, there was placed over his grave a monumental brass (see Figure 1), together with the close-up of John’s arms and crest (see figure 2) - the crest as engraved upon the marrow scoop and as blazoned above. We may presume therefore that this marrow scoop was at one time in the possession of a descendant of one of the Norfolk or Suffolk branches of the family.
