FINE GEORGE II CARVED GILTWOOD MIRROR with PHOENIX CREST

England, c1750

 

 

The rectangular plate within a finely executed rocaille carved and pierced giltwood surround of S- and C-scrolls,

acanthus leaves and  floral pendants, the crest centering a dimensionally carved feathered phoenix,

the curved neck extending forward of the mirror plane.

One of the better giltwood mirrors recently available in the United States.

Condition : Excellent; retaining most of its original gilding;

mirror plate and backing old replacements; other expected minor cracks

surmounted by an ebonized eagle and brass, gilt gesso and cut glass candlearms

A personal note :  I usually prefer much flat mirrors but

 found this small convex example completely irresistible.
