WILLIAM & MARY / WILLIAM III NEEDLEWORK SILK TAPESTRY
England, Late 17th & Early 18th Centuries






The center comprising two panels of very intricate silk embroidery on a silk ground, with a maned lion amidst scrolls
and foliage on one panel, a fountain, flowers and scrolls on the other; the border probably Queen Anne period,
early 18th century, with couched silk and embroidered lotus floral scrolls; backing of antique claret silk
Condition: Excellent for the age; some area of loose silk threads; several very small breaks to silk ground;
silk backing unfolding but secured at the top.
Note: Needlework of this delicacy is best preserved beneath glass. They make excellent additions to painting collections.
The panel can be mounted on silk or antique linen, with a frame of your choice. This treatment is a personal
decision, and we will be happy to assist in the chosen presentation of this needlework.
