YES, AMERICA, SPRING WILL REALLY COME!

For all except possibly Arizona, this seems to be an endless - and relentless - winter.

We here in the South usually have daffodils, forsythia and blooming pear trees by March 1.

Instead we still have forecasts of sleet and 20 degrees.  And the Northeast seems destined for a 'White Summer'.

However, tradition holds that Spring, with its gentle grasses and young greenery, does come - yearly...

as the rather incredible scene below depicts :

Hugh Bolton Jones, American (NY / MD) 1848-1927

"Spring Reflections"

Oil on Canvas

Housed in 22K giltwood custom Federal Frame with 18K liner (original giltwood frame also available)

Image Size 16" x 24" / Framed Size 27" x 35"

An exceptional example of this fine Hudson River School painter's work.

Hugh Bolton Jones is one of several painters whose work haunts me visually.

Often I see a scene that my eye spontaneously turns it into a H. B. Jones painting -

making lace from thinly leafed trees and finely drawn grasses,

surrounded by space and air with a sense of quiet and serenity.

One comes to mind just west of Nashville TN, near where the Harpeth River crosses I-40.

Another is a simple vacant lot outside a fast-food restaurant I frequent.

They all become just good places to be - anytime.

Of course, Spring is followed by Summer Sun - and Blessed Shade...

Theresa Ferber Bernstein (NY / MA) 1890-2002

"Sunny Path, Central Park", 1917

Oil on Board Image size : 9' x 11.5" / Framed size : 15.75" x 18.5"

Provenance : Exhibited Grand Central Art Galleries, NYC, 1988, with label verso

Extraordinary brushwork and figural depiction in Central Park, NYC.

Theresa Bernstein lived to be 111 years old, this work being produced in the early part of her NY career.

At the time, the painter that she most admired was Robert Henri - although she never studied directly under him.

Even so, Henri's influence is quite evident in this boldly executed small painting -

so boldly done in fact that it is difficult to imagine that an early 20th century female's hand was the author.

Then Autumn...(when we rake all that Shade)

Arthur Clifton Goodwin / (MA / NY) 1866-1929

"White Boat on the Hudson River" (West Point)

Oil on Canvas / Custom American Impressionist style frame

Image Size : 20" x 24" / Framed Size : 27" x 31"

Boldly executed in an impasto manner, almost contemporary in feel.

Goodwin was considered by Childe Hassam to be "the greatest painter in Boston".

He was never caught up in fads or changing styles, painting honestly what he felt about the subject at the time.

This painting exhibits that independence, being almost an exuberant statement - both in the brushwork and coloration.

It makes quite a strong statement in the room.

Then Finally Christmas Gifts & Gaiety Can Return!

Robert Cozad Henri, American (NY / PA) 1865-1929

"Final Touches"

Noted on the drawing : December 25, 1925

Pencil on Buff Paper, pencil signed within the drawing, numbered verso twice

Image Size : 12" x 16" / Framed Size : 24" x 28"

Signed with titled label verso for Love Galleries, Chicago / Christie's NY 1992

The central figure reminiscent in many ways of Berthe Morisot's portrait of Julie Manet,

"Fillette au chat" (that image shown on the linked page).

Henri is known to us all.  He remains one of America's most important painters and teachers,

and was the founder of the early 20th century group of painters known as the "Ashcan School".

He is probably best known for his oil portraits - that reflect a little of Frans Hals with a 20th century attitude.

However, his drawings are equally arresting - always filled with great immediacy and "the moment" as he experienced it.

SO GET READY ... ON YOUR MARK ...

HUM ... "EVERYTHING'S COMING UP CROCUS'"... DAILY !

SPRING REALLY WILL RETURN TO AMERICA !

(She's just having a very hard time getting dressed - it's a lady thing, you know...)
