"SO DARLING, DARLING STAND BY ME ...."

A song for all friends and lovers :

When the night has come

And the land is dark

And the moon is the only light we see

(Jean Mannheim, Germany / Early California, "Storm Clouds", Oil on Canvas)

 ...No I won't be afraid,

No I won't be afraid

Just as long as you stand, stand by me...

So darling, darling stand by me...

"Stand By Me" was originally performed by Ben E. King and written by King, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.  It was inspired by the spiritual "Lord Stand By Me", and two lines from The Psalms.

Over 400 versions have been recorded.

There are varying stories on the original recording - whether as an after-thought after recording "Spanish Harlem" -- or developed by King and producers Leiber and Stoller from a simple a cappella tune to the familiar sound we know and hum.

In any event, the record topped the Rhythm and Blues charts - #1 in 1961, and #4 in 1986, when the movie by the same name was released.  Rolling Stone rated "Stand By Me" #122 on the list of the 500 "Greatest Hits of All Time", and BMI names it the 4th most performed 20th century song.  In 2012, "Stand By Me" received the Towering Song Award, and King the Towering Performance Award.
