Note about early sets of dining chairs:

The designated dining room as we know it today, with a large table, sideboard, servers, and matching chairs, did not evolve until

the late18th century.  In the 17th and early 18th centuries, dining could be in a great hall around long tables usually with benches or stools,

or in smaller multi-functional rooms around a smaller gate-leg, drop leaf or even smaller tilt-top table with a variety of chairs - with both sets

and single chairs - all of which were pulled to the wall when not use.  Meals were also similarly taken in the bedrooms on smaller tables

 with existing chair use.

Sets of early 18th century chairs are not plentiful. Although the were made, they often remain only in pairs.  We are quite pleased to

offer this set six of early 18th century provincial English chairs, with graceful curved solid splats, cabriole legs and stretchers.  The form

is that of the Queen Anne period and of mortise and tenon construction.  As they appear of provincial origin,  the dating may be slightly

later – but probably not later than 1730.  In addition, the curved solid splat has both strength and comfort for extended use that is

sadly absent in later more fragile chairs.  These are well suited for the less formal use in today’s homes, as well as around a pedestal

table with a more formal covering.  The covering on the slip seats is easily changed to accommodate individual surroundings.
