Robert Trickett, Sheffield, 1774
The flattened hexagonal shafts with inset gadrooning to each corner, ending in a leaf scrolled cap; the polished carbon steel Scimitar I blades recent replacements; of heavy weight
Condition : Excellent with expected small depressions to haft from normal usage; Marks : maker's marks mostly rubbed but legible - all R.T, Sheffield, 1774, and lion passant; most rubbed from use but legible
Note : The haft is a known Sheffield form, used from c1765. This form is somewhat rare in today’s market Robert Trickett was among the first to register his mark and working address (Plate Worker, Far Field), at Sheffield, on September 15, 1773. The first registration took place on September 11, of that year, when the Assay Office opened in Sheffield by an Act of Parliament passed in that year (“the thirteenth year of the reign of King George the Third”). It was instituted to prevent confusion with the Old Sheffield Plate made in the region, and also as a result of the poor facilities for transit of merchandise to neighboring offices for proper assay.
