RARE CARVED FIGURAL SILVER-MOUNTED FRUITWOOD DESK SEAL :
A FOX SEATED ON STUMP
France, Marks : Post-1838 Boar's Head, Maker's Mark in a Lozenge

 

 

The intricately carved seated fox perched atop a tapering vine-entwined tree stump,
his gaze downward, back arched and tail descending,
the stump raised on a shaped floral and foliate-decorated .800 silver seal,
engraved to the verso with conjoined (and reversed) initials JBS

 

 

Condition :

Excellent; beautifully carved with crisp details; maker's mark too small to read, possibly C / device / T;

some resistant tarnish; only the expected fine surface scratches appropriate to age and usage
