PAIR OF PEARLWARE BLUE & WHITE EGG DRAINERS
“Temple” Pattern Variant, Possibly Davenport
England, c1810
Each round shallow drainer (strainer) printed with the Temple Pattern variant, depicting Chinese temple in an island river landscape within a brocade type border, the short molded handle with a trefoil end and blue dot diapering
Often referred to a tea strainer, these unique small pierced dishes are reported to go back to the earliest days of ceramic collecting. They are known as drainers, strainers, and occasionally poachers. Most likely they were sued for serving poached eggs. Made in porcelain Worcester, Caughley, and Derby, these are in a variant of the Caughley Temple pattern, and likely from the Davenport manufactory, in pearlware, a softer pottery (as creamware) with bluing added to the glaze to give the desired whiteness of Chinese porcelain.
