M. FORD CREECH ANTIQUES
LITTLE WOLFE POND, NY
ADIRONDACK (NY) SCHOOL
American, Early 20th Century
(Possibly related to Frederic Sackrider Remington's "North Country" Works, 1900-08)

Oil on canvasboard
Inscribed in pencil on reverse “Little Wolfe Pond”
Probably the original frame, and in as found condition, unvarnished and with surface grime
Provenance: Massachusetts collector; a Long Island estate
Little Wolfe Pond is in the northwest corner of the present "Adirondack State Park," New York, near Ogdensburg &
the St. Lawrence River. Frederic Sackrider Remington's summer home, "Ingleneuk," was in Chippewa Bay, in the St.
Lawrence, a short distance away (1900-1908). This painting relates favorably to a group of oil studies, often known as
“North Country” works, executed in that area while summering at Ingleneuk during that period. Many are now housed in the
Frederick Remington Museum in Ogdensburg. The palette, brushwork, composition and subject matter were compared
first hand at the museum by the previous owner. He also found no other recorded "Adirondack painters"
who worked in this style and palette. On those bases, a possible Remington relation or attribution was made.
However, this painting was purchased primarily for its visual and aesthetic excellence.
It is elegant but with vigorous brushwork, recalling not only early American impressionism of the Northeast painters,
but a bit of Monet. Similar palettes are also found among other early 20th century painters, as George Loftus Noyes.
Although consistent with comparable "North Country" works, it may prove to be by yet another very fine painter of the period,
as Remington often invited his colleagues to visit and paint with him in the area. Or the painter may be quite skilled, but unknown.
"Little Wolfe Pond" has been accepted for review by the Remington committee in April 2008.
We do hope that they can direct us in ascertaining exact authorship.
