Little Wolfe Pond is in the northwest corner of the present "Adirondack State Park," New York, near Ogdensburg
& the St. Lawrence River. Frederic Sackrider Remington's summer home, "Ingleneuk," was in Chippewa Bay, in
the St. Lawrence, a short distance away (1900-1908). This painting relates favorably to a group of oil studies,
often known as “North Country” works, executed in that area while summering at Ingleneuk during that period.
However, this painting was purchased primarily for its visual and aesthetic excellence. It is precisely constructed,
elegant, and vigorous brushwork, recalling not only early American impressionism of the Northeast painters, but a bit
of Monet. Similar palettes using violets, Naples and lemon yellows with cobalt green and alizarin madder are found
among only a few early 20th century American painters.
Although consistent with comparable "North Country" works, it is slightly larger than known examples. It may also
have been painted by yet another very fine painter of the period, as Remington often invited his colleagues to visit
and paint with him in the area.
