An assembled New Hall hard paste porcelain tea service, in the Boy and the Butterfly, or

Boy and the Bug, pattern, painted in overglaze enamels over a printed outline, most with overglaze

pattern number and/or painters’ marks.

Boy and the Butterfly was one of a number of complementary designs featuring anglicized 'bubble-head'

Chinese figures. It is derived by imitation and adaptation from fashionable imported Chinese Export porcelain

designs. Similar patterns to New Hall Boy and the Butterfly pattern 421 are found on Staffordshire Minton and

Miles Mason. On some pieces – usually teabowls, the "bug" is found as a caterpillar, on others it has become a

butterfly with wings added."
