VERY RARE KRAAK PORCELAIN CHARGER
WAN LI, JINGDEZHEN, CHINA, C1575-1605
Of molded and foliate form, the central roundel painted with the “ducks-in-a-pond” motif (also referred to
as "duck defending her nest from a magpie"), with one duck perched on a rocky outcrop surmounted by an airborne
bird or duck, among lotus and other flora, the flat rim with equal segments divided by thin double line, depicting small
delicate flowers, birds and insects, the verso with birds on 2 blooming branches.
A similar dish at 21 cm. in is the Victoria & Albert Museum (Inv. C. 79219117) with egret mark verso.
This size is quite large for the flattened rim.
The rim form is type IV (“Kraak Porcelain”, Rinaldi, pp. 182-187), and the molding form (a) is found only occasionally on type IV dishes.
Condition: 2 tight but visible hairlines, causing the loss of ring. Typical glaze blisters;
thin edge porcelain with usual edge fritting; undercut thick footrim; chatter marks
