KANGXI SCARCE SILVER-MOUNTED MUSTARD POT
China, c1700, The Mounts 19th Century Dutch

 

 

 

 

Of globular form with loop handle, the domed cover with a seated fu-dog finial,
the body painted in bright underglaze blues with chrysanthemums below birds in flight,
the cover with further chrysanthemum and prunus sprays, the finial surrounded by concentric blue lines;
fitted with silver scalloped mounts to the neck and cover,
the handle surmounted by a shell-form upright thumb lift and
with a silver band mid-section and to the handle base and body attachment:
the rim and cover notched to accommodate a silver mustard spoon

 

Fu (or foo) dogs are said to symbolize protection
and preventing anyone with malicious intent from entering your home.
17th and early 18th century Chinese porcelain mustard pots are somewhat scarce.
See the 1643 Pieter Claesz still life shown below, depicting a similar pot, some 50 years earlier.

 

Condition : Excellent; the body interior with a small an unglazed rectangle;
small repair to silver at base of thumb lift
