KANGXI BLUE AND WHITE MONKEY EWER
China c1700

The seated smiling monkey holding a blue ewer (the spout, and possibly derived from a peach),
having a removable head forming the cover, a loop handle to the backside;
the head with blue ears and eyes, and body with wave or cloud like diapering
painted to the front with an upright tree (probably also peach)
issuing from roots surrounding three cash symbols,
and to the base with a band of thunder/cloud key fret decoration

The monkey is an important part of Buddhist lore and Taoist lore in China.
There are many legends in which the monkey is portrayed initially as foolish, vain, and mischievous.
Yet, in each, the monkey learns valuable lessons along the way,
makes changes, and eventually gains redemption.
The monkey thus embodies the themes of repentance, responsibility, devotion,
and the promise of salvation to all who sincerely seek it.
