This is a small but exceptional drawing by French / American painter Jules Pascin. Most are familiar with Pascin for his numerous drawings and paintings of women, often in a very provocative manner. This unusual work departs from that mode into almost a sensitive and introspective view of a young boy in a donkey-drawn cart. The work was most likely from his brief Cuban or perhaps Southwest visits Pascin when working and living in America. Even in its simplicity, it depicts a bit more definition than many of Pascin's works - the development being exceptional in every respect.
Pascin certainly needs no introduction to most of you. Born in Bulgaria in 1885, Pascin worked most of his life in Paris, moving to America in 1914 with the outbreak of World War I, and eventually becoming an American citizen in 1927. When in America, Pascin associated with a coterie of progressive painters - among them Walt Kuhn, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, and Max Weber - who were "influenced by his figurative style in which he conjoined elements of Expressionism and Cubism with a highly personal vision of his environment". Pascin died at an early age from self-inflicted wounds, it is said after an unfavorable review of his works. |
