I have a particular fondness for the provincial quality of painting and the intense West Pans-like blue used by the Liverpool
makers John Pennington, and his younger brother Seth Pennington. The Pennington family consisted of three brothers -
James, the eldest working at Brownlow Hill until about 1772, where John was said to have been employed prior to opening
his own manufactory in 1770. John's business was carried on by his wife Jane after his death in 1787, continuing to 1794.
The youngest brother, Seth Pennington, worked with John Part from 1778-99.
The presented coffee pot has the grace of the finer ceramics of the time (lovely double scroll handle) as well as the truly brilliant
blues I find so attractive. These blues, which can get lost in the refined Worcester type of detail, are shown at their best in this
unsophisticated manner of painting.
