HAN DYNASTY GREEN-GLAZED DOG

China, 206 B.C. – 220 A.D.

A rare large Han Dynasty green-glazed pottery dog, well modeled in red pottery (earthenware), standing four square,

wide-eyed and teeth bared, with pointed ears, a curled tail, and wearing a studded harness; thickly potted and quite heavy

Note: The first lead glazes were used during the Han Dynasty.  They fired a deep rich green, which, when exposed to long periods of moisture,

became an iridescent silvery grey-green.  Only in dryer areas did they retain their original brighter coloration.

Condition: Well done and stable restoration to the head and harness, with retouching to the green glaze in the leg areas

18" H x 13 ½” L x 7" W
