ANTIQUE GHIORDES RUG

West Anatolia,  Late 19th Century

 

 

 

Wool pile on cotton foundation, with all vegetal dyes, of double niched form, the central floral stepped

red and green medallion with flower heads and frond-like flowers, on a red field, the corner sections

having tulips on a well abrashed turquoise ground sided by flowerheads within the end niches,

the major border of Caucasian dragons and further flowerheads sided by an inner carnation border

and an outer border that is probably an abstraction of the cloudband border

 

Condition: Good condition, with low even pile throughout, original fringes and selvedges, retaining

hanging loops from the upper end

 

Note: According to Garabred Thomas Pushman (Art Panels from the Handlooms of the Far Orient),

Ghiordes rugs are the best specimens of rugs produced in Turkey, and from the “standpoint of art,

compare favorably with many of the masterpieces from Persian weavers”.   They are woven in a

small ancient town of Asiatic Turkey, as few miles northeast of Smyrna.  Ghiordes were copied by other

areas in Turkey and often passed as original Ghiordes. (This rug has been vetted by a leading US rug specialist).
