Vinaigrettes are descended from the pomander - a small aromatic box that was used to ward off infection.  Toward the end

of the 18th century, personal hygiene was not a top priority.  As well the water and inadequate sewerage system caused the

air often to be quite foul - even causing the closing of Parliament on occasion.  To combat the odors, these small  hinged and

pierced boxes with sponges soaked in aromatic vinegar were employed, the interiors gilt to avoid erosion of the precious silver.

Of rectangular form with slightly arched lid, the lid bright cut with a central rectangle engraved "EAG" in contemporary script

on foliate and stippled ground within a raised foliate border, opening to a bright cut pierced gilt interior grille lid

above an open compartment, the verso with a floral spray within bright cut zigzag and line borders; marked top and base

 

Condition: Excellent; heavy gauge silver

 

 1 3/8" Long x 1" Deep x 1/2" High , .6 oz.

Of domed octagonal form, the top bright cut with a leaf border enclosing a contemporary conjoined script

initial "JOR", the gilt interior with a simple pierced grille lid; marked on lid and base

 

Condition: Several dents to the exterior; otherwise excellent

A small rectangular vinaigrette, the hinged lid with a gilded center with unengraved rectangle surrounded by
diapering set within a domed floral rim, opening to a hinged gilt-washed chased scrolling floral grille, the bottom
 compartment containing a scented sponge; the verso with fine diapering within reeding, all hanging from a
dependent loop; marked on lid and base (date mark A)
 
Condition: Excellent; hinges in good working order without breaks or replacements
 
1" Long x  9/16" Wide x  5/16" High, .4 oz.
