England, c1735-40





The "ox-yoke" curved arm ending in rounded terminals and surmounted by an overscroll crest block above two vasiform
splat interspersed with columnar supports, padded drop-in seat with molded rails and shaped returns, raised on a front cabriole leg
ending in a pad foot, the other legs interestingly turned; original rose head nails and pegged mortise and tenon construction,
silk upholstery
Condition: Very good; original seat frame with repairs and added braces, old, if not original, finish with wear appropriate to age
and usage; lacking one glue block; several minor separations
Provenance: Justine Fisher Collection, Travelers Rest, South Carolina
Corner chairs, also known as writing chairs, were popular from 1700-70, the most being made between 1730-50.
This is a very good early example
