Of heavy gauge silver, the shaped oval form with plain field and gadrooned rim, the top rim bearing a contemporary
coat of arms, the shield with as estoile of eight rays between two ermine flaunches supported by a stag, dexter, and a talbot,
sinister, each rampant, regardant and gorged with a radiant collar, below a baron’s coronet, the motto below:
“AUCTOR PRETIOSA FACIT” (“The author stamps the value”), probably for Hobart of Buckinghamshire;
the lower rim
with a later gothic initial “S”; verso engraved with “69=14” and “No. 2”
Condition: Excellent; light expected surface scratches; excellent marks
Note: Edward Wakelin was an extremely important silversmith of the mid-18th century (working 1747-1777).
