RARE GEORGE II SILVER HASH SPOON

In the Hanoverian pattern, the egg shaped bowl with well preserved cast and chased shell and

scroll back heel, the long shaft with upturned terminal engraved with the contemporary monogram

 T over R I over the crest of an escallop shell reversed (Fairbairnes Plate, #53-3 ; Bolger, Scaife)

 

Condition: Excellent

 

Marks: Grimwade #3744 – see page 552 under Nathaniel Horwood; also see Jackson,

English Goldsmiths & Their Marks, p. 209, pair of teaspoons (Messrs. Crichton, 1763-4)

 

 

Note: Hash spoons are very large basting spoons, over 13” in length, that were used for serving hash

(mixture of potatoes and meat) in the 18th and 19th centuries.
