Of heavy gauge silver, the small ovoid body with shaped rim and narrow neck having an
applied leaf-capped scrolled handle and raised on 3 drake feet issuing from chased rocaille
headings; the body with fine and intricate chasing - centering a front rocaille-form cartouche
engraved IG in contemporary script surmounted by a detailed peacock displayed, the tail
descending down the right side of the cartouche, the body sides with further elaborate
rocaille cartouches– the right side with a ship at sea between leafy trees,
the left side with a cottage behind a pond with two geese and a tree beside
Condition: Excellent, with a small repair to one leg knee;
marks good with light rubbing to the H in the maker’s mark
*Note: Mark – WH beneath a heart in a shaped punch (Grimwade # 3885).
This mark is on a pair of tea vase in the collection of Sir Charles Jackson
(English Goldsmiths and Their Marks - author). There is a probability that the mark
belongs to the nephew of William Hunter I, William Hunter Jr., who was apprenticed to him,
rather than to Hunter I. See Grimwade discussion under William Hunter I, p.555
