GEORGE II SILVER AND CARVED MOTHER OF PEARL SNUFF BOX

England, c1735-45, Unmarked

 

 

 

 

The cartouche shaped silver body with a hinged mother-of-pearl dimensionally carved mother-of-pearl cover depicting two lovers in a rocaille setting, seated between a dolphin-spewing fountain and an apple tree, with three apples on the ground and a manor house behind, sun rays in the upper right and small birds in the air; all within a line and rocaille border;

the base also mother-of-pearl, the interior silver gilt

 

Condition : Excellent, the mother of pearl with minor expected wear to the high points, but without cracks or chips; the silver with some spots of stubborn tarnish both to the outer and inner mounts, particularly beneath the interior gilt;

one small stable split to the base mount at back, visible in the images
