GEORGE III SILVER-MOUNTED TORTOISESHELL & IVORY TEA CADDY

The small octagonal tortoiseshell tea caddy with ivory stringing opening to a tortoiseshell

foil lined interior with tortoiseshell inner lid, the outer lid and keyhole escutcheons of silver

 

Condition: Excellent; fabric on verso replaced

 

Highly polished tortoiseshell tea caddies became popular in the 1780's.  These were of small octagonal form, primarily

to accommodate the small panels of shell, that were further divided by ivory stringing.  Most have silver mounts.  This is

an early example, in perfect condition, retaining its inner tortoiseshell lid and foil-covered panels.  It is far rarer than the

later and larger Regency and Victorian examples.
