George III GADROONED Silver Wine Funnel Stand

Peter & William Bateman, London, 1813

 

Of heavy gauge silver, the round stand with a domed and crested center,

surrounded by a finely gadrooned border,

the center engraved with the crest of Outlawe, Little Wickingham, co. Norfolk :

a demi-wolf proper, pierced through the side with an arrow or, feathered and headed argent, the arrow in bend sinister (Fairbairn's, and The General Armory, Burke)

 

(Thomas Outlawe, of Wickingham, County Norfolk, son of Ralph Outlawe, first

granted Arms and Crest (by Camden) in June 1613)

 

Condition : Excellent; good marks, with the maker's mark struck askew but quite legible

William Sumner, London 1791

 

The two-part funnel with reeded borders to the lip, neck and top of the spout,

the strainer with star-shaped piercing and having a nicely shaped tang,

the detachable spout with a curved shaped tip;

fully marked to the bowl, the spout with lion passant

 

Condition : Excellent, without damages or repairs

GEORGE III SCOTTISH SILVER WINE FUNNEL STAND

Edinburgh, 1786-1797, Mark of ID* in a Shield

 

The round stand with a single line of edge reeding surrounding a domed center with crest

and motto : a hart's head below the motto STEADY (Fairbairn's 121.5) :

Dalrymple (Scotland), or M'Adam of Craigengillan, Ayrshire (Scotland);

marked verso with a Thistle, George III in an oval punch, and ID in a shield punch*

 

*ID in a shield : There are two listed Edinburgh silversmiths using the Roman initials ID, both working at the time this George III. 

The punch was used : James Dempster and James Douglas.  Both are shown with an ID in an oval punch.

This could be a variant for them, or by an unlisted or provincial maker.
