GEORGE III SILVER PUNCH BOWL
*John Wakelin & William Taylor, London, 1809

Of heavy gauge silver, the deep octagonal bowl on conforming octagonal foot, sided by two handles
issuing lions’ heads, and having two opposing coats of arms: the first unidentified, the second, the Arms of
the Duke Family of Suffolk (three birds in a charged shield below a crest with 5 plumes and scabbard) and the
motto “IN ADVERSIS IDEM” (Not Shaken by the Winds of Adversity)
(The Duke Family of Suffolk: from the earliest known ancestor in a direct line to Roger le Duc, of
Normandy, France, through his descendants in Suffolk County, England, and thence to Virginia)
*Note: Wakelin & Taylor were very important late 18th century silversmiths.
Wakelin appears in the Jewel Office accounts in 1797 as “Goldsmith and Jeweler to the King”
for several items. Very few punchbowls were made in London during this period.

slightly misstruck but legible, other marks crisp, slight dent to one side panel
