Nutmeg has long been believed to possess magical powers, being used as amulets to protect against a
wide variety of dangers & evils, even boils, rheumatism and broken bones. Production of silver graters for
nutmeg began in the late 1600's, as a spice for the all-popular "punch", the earliest graters being larger
"kitchen" graters . Small boxes of varying shapes, suitable for carrying on the person, came into fashion
during the 18th century, and were used throughout the first half of the 19th century.
