GEORGE III SILVER NUTMEG GRATER

The oval egg form with a screw top opening to a steel removable grater above an open storage space, the body

with the crest of an arm in armor, embowed and grasping a griffins head erased, above the motto

 "SEMPER VICTOR" (always a conqueror) and "C du P.L." verso

  

Condition: Excellent

  

Nutmeg has long been believed to possess magical powers, being used as amulets to protect against a

wide variety of dangers & evils, even boils, rheumatism and broken bones.  Production of silver graters for

nutmeg began in the late 1600's, as a spice for the all-popular "punch", the earliest graters being larger

"kitchen" graters .  Small boxes of varying shapes, suitable for carrying on the person, came into fashion

during the 18th century, and were used throughout the first half of the 19th century.
