GEORGE III SILVER RUNCIBLE SPOON/FORK
(SALAD SERVER)
Duncan Urquhart & Naphtali Hart, London, 1811
Scottish Use

A salad spoon/fork, in the Old English pattern with slotted bowl (runcible) and nicely arched shaft, the down-turned terminal
engraved with the crest of a heart issuing a dexter hand grasping a scimitar below the motto "TRUE TO THE END"
(Hume-Purves Campbell of Berwick, Hume of Coldingham)
(Fairbairn's #35-7)
Note: Although the consumption of raw vegetables has been thought beneficial since Greco-Roman times, this practice
was not common among the upper classes in England until the late 18th century. The influx of émigrés into England
after the French Revolution popularized salads in the French manner, and brought about the manufacture of elegant
English silver utensils, both for serving and eating.
Condition: Excellent, crisp marks
