GEORGE III MAHOGANY COCKPEN SIDE CHAIR

In the Chinese Chippendale style, the rectangular open fretwork back with re-entrant corners, over a broad stuff-over foliate

needlework upholstered seat, raised on square chamfered legs united by an H-form stretcher.

 

 Note: The cockpen chair was popular in England and Scotland during the last half of the 18^th century.  The design is said to

have derived from the Chinese lattice design pew chairs in Cockpen Church, Midlothian, Scotland, made for the

Marquesses and Earls of Dalhousie, circa 1755.  Several versions were published in Chippendale’s Directory of 1762.
